How Uniix Studio redesigned Bilesma Natural's packaging from a generic kraft bag into a premium botanical brand experience — and why packaging is one of the highest-leverage investments a Sri Lankan product business can make.

Bilesma Natural (Pvt) Ltd is a Sri Lankan natural beauty company built on a simple promise — help people let their inner beauty shine. The products lived up to it. The packaging didn't. Uniix Studio redesigned Bilesma Natural's product packaging from a plain kraft carry bag into a premium botanical brand experience that finally looks the way the products feel. This is how we did it — and why product packaging design is one of the highest-leverage investments a product business in Sri Lanka can make.

The challenge: great products, forgettable packaging

Bilesma Natural came to us with a recognisable problem for growing Sri Lankan product brands. The product quality was there. The packaging was holding the brand back.

The original carry bag was a standard brown kraft (SOS-style) paper bag with a single printed band wrapped around the middle and a small logo inside an outlined badge. On its own, it was a perfectly functional bag. As a brand asset, it had three problems:

  • It said nothing about "natural beauty." The utilitarian blue band and bare kraft read like a grocery or takeaway bag — not a wellness or skincare product. The most important word in the brand, natural, was nowhere to be seen visually.
  • It was invisible on shelf. Next to competitors, there was nothing to make a customer pause, pick it up, or remember it. No tagline, no colour story, no point of difference.
  • It wasted a free marketing surface. A carry bag travels home with the customer and sits on a counter or in a bag for days. The old design carried no website, no contact details, and no reason to reorder.

In short: the packaging was a cost, not an asset.

Our approach: six decisions that made the difference

Uniix Studio's design process is structured, not decorative. Every choice below was made to solve a specific brand problem.

1. We repositioned the format from "functional" to "premium"

Moving from bare kraft to a clean white bag immediately repositioned Bilesma Natural from "everyday" to "considered." White creates space, signals cleanliness and care, and gives the botanical artwork room to breathe — exactly the cues a natural skincare buyer is looking for.

2. We told the "natural" story visually

Instead of saying natural, we showed it. A cascade of watercolour botanicals — monstera and palm fronds — runs down one side of the bag, wrapping the brand in the tropical, fresh, plant-derived feeling at the heart of the product. This is the single biggest shift: the packaging now communicates the brand promise before a single word is read.

3. We locked the palette to brand-aligned greens

The old blue band fought the brand. We replaced it with a botanical green system that ties every touchpoint to nature, wellness, and skincare. Colour consistency is what turns a logo into a brand people start to recognise.

4. We gave the brand an emotional promise

We placed the line "Let Your Inner Beauty Shine" front and centre, emphasising BEAUTY in brand green. Packaging that carries a promise sells; packaging that only carries product just ships. This one line gives the customer a feeling to associate with the brand.

5. We turned the bag into a marketing and trust asset

A clean green footer band now carries the full business identity — www.bilesmanatural.lk, customercare@bilesmanatural.lk, both phone lines, and the Nugegoda address. Every bag that leaves the store becomes a reorder prompt and a credibility signal that travels into the customer's home.

6. We built a two-panel brand system

The bag works from any angle on shelf. One face leads with the emotional message; the other is a clean logo brand panel with delicate line-art botanicals and soft amber and sage accent leaves — a more sophisticated, layered look that reinforces the identity without shouting.

The result

The redesigned packaging gives Bilesma Natural what the old bag never could: a shelf presence that matches the product quality, a consistent visual identity across every unit, and a marketing surface that travels home with every customer.

What we can say with confidence from the design itself:

  • The brand now reads as premium and natural at a glance — no explanation required.
  • Every bag is a consistent, recognisable touchpoint rather than a generic one.
  • The packaging earns its cost back by driving reorders and reinforcing trust.

Why packaging design matters for Sri Lankan product brands

Packaging is often the first physical interaction a customer has with your brand — and frequently the last thing they see before deciding to buy again. For Sri Lankan retail, cosmetics, and food brands competing on crowded shelves and in marketplaces, well-considered packaging design does three jobs at once:

  1. It differentiates. A distinctive look is the cheapest, most durable competitive advantage you can buy.
  2. It signals quality. Customers infer product quality from packaging quality — fairly or not.
  3. It markets for free. Good packaging travels, gets photographed, gets reordered, and keeps your contact details in the customer's hands.

A small investment in packaging design routinely returns more than the same spend on ads, because the asset works on every single unit you sell — for as long as you sell it.

Frequently asked questions

How much does product packaging design cost in Sri Lanka?

Product packaging design in Sri Lanka typically ranges from around LKR 40,000 for a single-item label or bag design to LKR 250,000+ for a full packaging system across multiple product lines, depending on scope, the number of formats, and whether brand identity work is included.

What makes good packaging design for a natural or beauty brand?

Good natural-beauty packaging communicates the brand promise visually — through palette, illustration, and material — before any text is read. It should look premium, stay consistent across every product, and double as a marketing surface by carrying the brand's contact and web details.

How long does a packaging redesign take?

A focused single-format packaging redesign usually takes two to four weeks, including discovery, concept, revisions, and print-ready files. Larger systems across multiple product lines take longer.

Can you redesign packaging without changing our whole brand?

Yes. A packaging redesign can refresh the look and shelf presence while keeping your existing logo and core identity, or it can be paired with a fuller brand identity update if the current branding is holding you back — as it was in the Bilesma Natural project.

Does Uniix Studio offer packaging design in Sri Lanka?

Yes. Packaging design sits within Uniix Studio's Design pillar, alongside brand identity, logo, and UI/UX design. We work with retail, ecommerce, and hospitality brands across Sri Lanka, Australia, and the UK.

Ready to make your packaging work as hard as your product?

If your product is better than your packaging makes it look, that gap is costing you sales on every shelf. Uniix Studio designs packaging and brand identities that perform.
